Aetna and the Aetna Foundation Awards TxPEC and EIA Grant
We are very pleased to announce and thank the AETNA Foundation for their faith in our project, “Let’s Talk, Texas!”. In a joint application with TAHSA’s Educational Institute on Aging(EIA), the $239,000 award allows TxPEC to pilot systems change in advance care planning over a three year period. We will solicit applications from hospitals, physician practices and long term care facilities that want to become one of the pilots to demonstrate the benefits of integrating and improving the “planning” process for healthcare decision-making. Research demonstrates that completing the advance directive forms are not enough to assure that wishes are honored and followed. Because of this, patients are often given intrusive or unwanted treatments at the end-of-life. This may reduce the quality of life of these patients and result in increased costs for the patient and the healthcare entity. Partnering with Gunderson Lutheran Hospital and Respecting Choices, our project will work intensely with the pilots to integrate a more effective planning process. Other outcomes include a Texas-specific advance care planning document and data collection and dissemination on the results of the interventions, and a “how-to manual” on replicating the process of the pilot sites.

Educational Offerings to learn more about this opportunity for your hospital, physician practice or long term care facility are outlined in the "Let's Talk, Texas!" brochure. These free educational seminars take place in four cities in January and February of 2007.

This document contains key information and data from the Texas Pain Summit as well as surveys of Texas households and healthcare practitioners. It offers insights into a broad spectrum of issues surrounding the experience of pain by Texans. It also sheds light on the attitudes and knowledge of Texas healthcare professionals regarding pain and its treatment. Read and share this report with others. It is a useful reference in talking about pain in Texas.
